week 7 - Personal branding

I have tried out several different styles to present my personal banner.
I decision used Chinese ink and wash painting (Chinese Brush Painting) style, due to I want through traditional Chinese culture to express myself. Basically, the forms of culture are many and varied. Such as lyre-playing, chess, calligraphy, painting, Beijing opera, etc… (I have selected several types created and shown on sketching book.)
The reasons for chosen the style of Chinese ink and wash painting that could enhance some artistic quality of my personal branding, but also non-luxuriantly. The painting have three basic characteristics of naturally, figuratively and simplicity. As well as express concepts such as purity, self-reflection, and human nature. And I think Ink and Wash Art is the unique Chinese art style, which implicates the oriental philosophy and reflect the Chinese aesthetic attitudes.
(In traditional through this medium could be limit self to the creation of works in black-and-white. The paintings are understood and evaluated in relation to a system often termed the “rhythm of the ink,” by which different applications and gradations of ink including wet, dry, light, dark, burned, and others.)
The front I chosen Calligraphy is that the art of writing. Works of calligraphy are simultaneously admired for their form and ability to communicate information. The art form typically uses ink brushes to create characters. The aesthetic qualities of calligraphy originate from the artists’ use of brush strokes as a means for expressing thoughts and emotions. The techniques and materials used in calligraphy are extremely similar to  ink-and-wash.

  1. Hi Rui,

I'm very impressed with such conscious selection of graphics based in what gives you identity (your cultural background, your interest in paint and art and the traditions in your country). It is good to know you feel proud of them because, ultimately, that is what makes the real difference between each individual, that's what gives you real identity.
Your imagery and graphics are then CONCEPTUALLY stron. But graphically I find your business card really overcrowded.
I suggest you to keep the background, get rid of the dragon logo on the left, change the typography colour in your name to the same red of the dragon, get rid of the left images (wave and flower) and decrease the around 2 points the typo of your tel and email.
It is not neccessary to use so many elements that are so visually different and that clash so much between each other to get your concept through. Culture, chinese ink and your personality are identifiable through the 3 elements you will keep.
I want to stress the fact that these are only MY suggestions, you decide if you take them or not.

I also expect you to make a decision related to elements you will keep and how they will be applied to your CV.

Also, start the selection of projects you will include in your portfolio and the description of them considering the following:

    Name of the Project:
    Brief:
Description of conceptual and technical development:

If you are planning to keep your blog and not make a website then, ensure that your blog considers the same personal branding you are working with (palette of colours, typography and graphic elements).

    See you next week,
    Mariana.
